A lot of high school students going onto a four year college have a rather challenging time choosing out what to study. And you have to admit it is certainly problematic, soon after all whatever they pick to study will expense them a quite penny and it greater be some thing that offers them a return on investment if they are to spend off all those student loans correct?
So, let us say the student is not genuinely into the sciences, medicine, computers, and chooses to chase a social science degree. This becomes a truly hard decision. For instance if they pick history, will they genuinely learn history? History is something that we continually re-create based on politics, power, and manage. Victors re-create the history usually. And as 1 individual mentioned “they just re-arrange the piles of crap to keep you on your feet, apart from unless you were there, you can’t know.”
Nicely, how about a degree in law, politics or economics, as there are jobs offered and you may well really understand some thing proper? Ha ha ha. Okay, let’s take that premise and contemplate this. Initial, Law can’t be learned, oh positive, you can find out some theory and memorize some laws, but it’s constantly altering. And truly it is all gray, never black and white, it just appears to be.
Politics is sound and fury, and whilst it is fascinating, it truly is fairly a disgusting field to be in. Economics is funny, because it is obvious that no one has a clue, and in a space with one hundred economists to the global economic crisis, you get one hundred different answers.
Okay that leaves Company and management. Of course, company shouldn’t be taught by professors who’ve by no means carried out it, I just laugh at them, they are largely clueless. The a lot more prestigious company schools are worthy, they have actual business individuals from business teaching, but have you seen the cost lately? Yes, properly, I can see why college students are so confused actually. Please contemplate this and don’t default on your student loans, I already spend sufficient in taxes.

Prime undergrad student Sol Sun says marks come naturally if you pursue your passion
Sol Sun was a busy man at UFV’s current convocation ceremonies.
He was the student speaker for the College of Arts ceremony, the dean’s medalist for the Faculty of Social Sciences within the College of Arts, and the Governor General’s silver medalist, an honour bestowed upon the graduate from a four-year degree system with the highest grade point typical (GPA) at the university.
Sun scored a excellent four.33 GPA on final 30 credits (an A+ typical), and earned a cumulative CGPA of four.24 over the course of his Bachelor of Arts degree in honours psychology.
When he employed to inform his close friends that he was studying psychology at university, they would quickly ask him to analyze their dreams. But there’s much a lot more to psychology than that. Sun’s specialty is the study of memory, and he has been operating for numerous years on projects in UFV’s psychology lab.
“Studying memory has changed the way I appear at life,” he says. “Once you actually get into studying it you commence to recognize just how fallible your memory is and you don’t trust it as significantly.”
His particular area of concentrate was how folks recognize faces and recognition memory — how a person recognizes stimuli in an atmosphere that they believe they have seen prior to.
He is grateful for the hands-on analysis opportunities he had at UFV.
“I heard there were good possibilities for research here. My friends at the bigger schools say they don’t get the exact same opportunities. There are bigger labs there, but significantly smaller sized roles for undergraduates. Here you can style a study and comply with it by way of to the end.”
The possibilities he had at UFV fostered his passion for studying.
“If there is a single private element that could have contributed to my achievement, I would say it is a passion to keep finding out. No matter how significantly time one particular spends studying, the finish outcome will never ever be as fantastic as someone who really wants to discover the material just because it is fascinating. I bear in mind in Grade 9 science, my teacher told us that marks do not matter and we ought to discover for the sake of learning. I thought he was crazy. Then, all through university, folks helped me recognize that he was right all along. When I created this realization, the marks came naturally, but I didn’t really care about them anymore. I believe the essential to good results is doing what you do, for the sake of performing that thing. That’s been my mentality more than the previous four years and I can certainly, to some degree, attribute my success to that philosophy."
Though he is honoured to have won the prime academic medal for an undergraduate, he is also eager to share the credit.
"I’m a firm believer that one’s achievements are in no way actually individual and are always influenced by others. Therefore I would attribute my success to having an incredible team of men and women on my side. 1st and foremost would be my honours thesis advisor, Dr. Andrea Hughes. She was genuinely every thing I could ask for in a mentor, personable, caring, experienced, intelligent, and usually kept my very best interests in thoughts. An enormous proportion of my achievement can be attributed to the incredible assistance I received from her.”
He also thanked other members of the Psychology department at UFV.
“On a bigger level, the whole psychology department was quite much a element of my accomplishment in winning this award. Dr. Wayne Podrouzek taught me to constantly be crucial and feel logically about every thing. Dr. Robyn White taught me to be careful and concise with my words. Dr. Sven Van de Wetering taught me never ever to miss the forest for the trees and often attempt to see the huge image. Dr. Lesley Jessiman taught me to always view events in an individual’s life as component of the entire lifespan. Dr. Zoe Dennison taught me that nothing at all is excellent and 1 must always weigh expenses and rewards in any decision.”
In addition to his investigation and research, Sol served as president of the Student Psychology Association. He sends thanks to his household, close friends, and fellow members of the association.
Sol’s aim is to attain a PhD and turn into a researcher in the field of cognitive psychology/neuroscience. He will be attending graduate college at the University of Toronto in September. He says that conducting investigation in the UFV psychology lab under the supervision of Dr. Andrea Hughes was definitely vital to both gaining acceptance into graduate college, and acquiring the needed abilities to be profitable in the future.
